Scoring
Every competition has its own scoring rules. A correct tip earns points, a wrong one normally earns nothing, and the mechanics you switch on (jokers, confidence, margins, the perfect round bonus) add to that. This page covers where each setting lives and how a tip’s points are worked out.
For the participant’s view of a tipping competition, see tipping on fanzava.com.
Points for a correct tip
Section titled “Points for a correct tip”You set the points for a correct tip in the Scoring section of the create-competition wizard, under Scoring Rules. The fields shown depend on the sport:
| Sport type | Fields in the wizard | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Team sports (AFL, NRL, football and similar) | Points for correct winner, Points for correct draw | 1 and 1 |
| Sports that cannot finish level (basketball, tennis and similar) | Points for correct winner | 1 |
| Formula 1 | Points for correct winner, Points for correct podium, Points for correct pole position, Points for correct fastest lap | 1, 3, 2 and 1 |
Points for a correct winner can be anything from 0 to 100. Most competitions keep the default of 1, which makes the leaderboard read as “number of tips right”.
The same number can also be set later as Correct tip under Base Rules in the competition’s Advanced Mechanics tab, which is where the other scoring knobs below live.
Wrong tips
Section titled “Wrong tips”A wrong tip scores 0 unless you set otherwise. To charge for a wrong pick, set Incorrect tip under Base Rules in Advanced Mechanics to a negative number. The Gaming Competitive preset does this, at minus one point a wrong tip.
The joker and the confidence rating never change what a wrong tip is worth. Both act on a correct pick only (the joker multiplies its points, confidence scales or sets them), so a wrong pick scores the same with or without either.
For a sport that can finish level, you can let participants pick the draw as a third option beside the two teams. Open the competition from Admin → Competitions and use the Draw picks card:
- Let members pick the draw adds a Draw option on every open fixture. A draw pick names no team.
- Points for a correct draw is what a draw pick earns when the match finishes level, up to 100.
On a sport that cannot finish level, the setting is unavailable, because a draw pick could never pay. A team pick on a drawn match is a wrong tip.
The mechanics that add to a tip
Section titled “The mechanics that add to a tip”Each of these has its own page. In brief:
- Joker tips: a participant nominates one tip a round to score at a multiplier of ×1.5 to ×3.
- Confidence: a participant rates how sure they are. In multiplier mode a rating scales a correct tip from 0.5× to 2.0×; in ladder mode they rank every game and a correct pick is worth its rank.
- Margin prediction: a participant also predicts the winning margin. An exact call is worth the margin weight, and every point of error costs one point.
- Perfect round bonus: a flat bonus once per round for a participant who got every tip right.
How a tip’s points are worked out
Section titled “How a tip’s points are worked out”For a correct tip, in this order:
- Start with the points for a correct tip (or the rank, in confidence ladder mode, or the draw points for a correct draw pick).
- If it is the participant’s joker, multiply by the joker multiplier.
- If confidence multiplier mode is on, multiply by the rating’s multiplier.
- Add any margin award (which the confidence rating also scales, but the joker does not).
- Round each part to a whole number.
For a wrong tip, the tip scores the Incorrect tip value (normally 0), plus a margin award in margin standalone mode.
Late penalties then come off, and once the round is complete the perfect round bonus is added.
A worked example, with 1 point for a correct tip, jokers at ×2 and confidence in multiplier mode: a participant tips the winner, plays their joker on it and rates it High (1.5×). The tip scores 1 × 2 × 1.5 = 3 points.
Settings that do not change points
Section titled “Settings that do not change points”A few controls in the Advanced Mechanics editor are stored but not used by scoring, and each one says so on screen with a note starting “Not applied by scoring”. They include the No-tip penalty and the streak bonus. Setting them has no effect on anyone’s points, so leave them at zero.
Changing scoring during a season
Section titled “Changing scoring during a season”A competition’s scoring rules are versioned. Until a round has been scored, a change simply updates the rules. After the first scoring run, the rules that produced those scores are locked, and a change is published as a new version instead:
- Saving a change in Advanced Mechanics or on the Draw picks card asks you for a short note saying what changed, then publishes the new version.
- The competition’s Scoring rules page (open the competition from Admin → Competitions) lists draft versions and lets you publish one. When you publish, you choose how it applies:
| Option | What happens |
|---|---|
| Go forward | The new rules apply to scoring from now on. Rounds already scored keep their points. |
| Retroactive rescore | Every scored round is queued to be scored again under the new rules. This can take time, and a progress bar shows it running. |
Before publishing you confirm that you understand the change may move participants’ points and ranks.
Common questions
Section titled “Common questions”Why did a participant’s round total change after the last game? Per-tip points appear as each result comes in, but the perfect round bonus is added only once every fixture in the round has a result.
Does a cancelled game count against anyone? No. A fixture the feed marks cancelled or postponed is voided: every tip on it scores nothing and none counts as wrong. See Lock policies and late tips.
Can different fixtures be worth different points? No. Every fixture in a competition is scored with the same rules. The joker is the way a participant makes one game count for more.
